Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
by Frederick Douglass
A 50,000 foot view of the life of Fredrick Douglass from his birth into slavery to his eventual escape to freedom. I found this to be a fascinating, albeit a strangely unemotional, read. Certainly, I was greatly disturbed by the many examples of cruelty and hatred unleashed against Douglass and his fellow slaves. However, the book reads more like a documentary as opposed to a work of dramatic fiction. I found this effective as it allowed for many themes to rise to the surface. This is an important read for anyone who wants to understand more about this shameful period of American history and the prejudices that continue to exist today.
“They attend with Pharisaical strictness to the outward forms of religion, and at the same time neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith....Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord. Shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?”
