One Day by David Nicholls

5.0

Dear romance lovers,

Imagine having a book with a super angsty slow-burn that lasts for years!! (but hey each chapter shows you a different year, I promise it won’t be torture)

No misunderstanding trope here (those are annoying as fuck). This is about 2 people who love each other and feel good around each other but they’re always in different places in life. The timing sucks.

When she first falls for him, he doesn’t find her interesting enough. When he’s totally in love with her, she’s dating someone else. When she wishes for him, his mother is dying and so much more in his life is happening. When he’s desperate to be with her, she doesn’t like the person he has become. He travels a lot and she’s focused in her career. Etc etc. Life.

But plot twist: this book is not about the romance. And you’ll know what I mean when you get to the last few chapters.
It’s about living life to its fullest. It’s about character development. It’s about friendship. It’s about growing old, and how time totally changes you and your relationships with the others. It’s about being brave enough to take chances. It’s about how sometimes life doesn’t make any sense and it’s unfair af. It’s about choosing good people and good things over the superficial, about not always choosing the easy way.

This book is a huge wake-up call. To live life to its fullest. To enjoy every day.

To not say I’ll do this “one day”. Do it today.

My favorite book of 2022 so far.
