Read as longlisted for the women's prize for fiction 2025. I really enjoyed this book which was surprising as going in I didn't think it was for me as I thought the writing style will be quite 'dry' and "dated" due to the time period.
O how was I wrong!
The writing was fabulous! Following Tibb Ingleby across Tudor England, we fall in love with her view of the world while she navigates the raw, scary and general awfulness of the country.
I loved the relationships she creates and builds with other characters, her strong unique voice (that will be well remembered) and her "tongue and cheek" humour which is dark but also fitting for the time.
A very refreshing historical fiction which I think is well deserved on the longslist this year. Although early to tell in my reading I do hope it's shortlisted 😀
