the writing is juvenile and i found myself cringing more than enjoying the book. the dialogue was historically inaccurate in the flashbacks and then overly modernized in the present tense moments. i found it so weird that someone who is neither biracial or LGBT would write characters who are, their experience felt cheapened and therefore didn’t sound authentic on paper. i was happy when it was over as i found myself skipping whole pages just to get to the end of the book.
