In the Woods by Tana French
4.0

I really enjoyed this read. It was slightly difficult to get started with but after the first chapter I was intrigued by the mysteries. There were some clues that allowed me to make assumptions about who the killer was, which isn’t a bad thing! It made me feel like I was right there with the detectives interviewing, examining, and piecing the puzzle together. The murder investigation examined every piece that would seem to fit into the killings. It wasn’t until about three quarters through that the “major break” happened and finally allowed for an arrest. There were other pieces that could have led to more arrests but that ultimately didn’t happen due to the main characters being told not to.

The main character is not my favorite person in the world, because French makes it seem like this is his first murder case and he can’t handle the psychological aspect of solving a murder. He’s constantly being spacey, not knowing his feelings, and was professional with his boss about who he was. Yes, some secrets don’t need to come out unless it will ultimately affect everything. But the memories he finally remembered did little to solve the case. It just brought up old baggage that shouldn’t have been brought to light (my personal opinion.) It allowed for more questioning to attempt to solve his case but the case for the girl, I feel, could have gone on without this. And yes, I understand she was trying to piece together the psychological stress Adam Ryan would be going through trying to connect the cases and remember what happened in his past. The love interest part wasn’t a huge turn off for this book, it just felt a little “added in” to make Adam’s life go more downhill towards the end of the book.

Cassie, on the other hand, was great! I enjoyed her as a character. She seemed professional with a lighter side that was easier to relate to (possibly why I liked her more). Yes, she wasn’t the narrator so her deep thoughts weren’t on total blast. She tied the main character down to the real world when he would disappear into his mind. He used her for his own selfish reasons and it hurt her.

Overall, I liked it. I would read it again.
