Sheets
by Brenna Thummler
A sweet and simple story about a ghost coming to terms with his death through a friendship with a young teenager.
Much of this book annoyed the hell out of me. I hate setups where all the adults behave in an irresponsible and unreasonable way and no one looks out for the main character.
Like, c'mon. This girl's mother died recently, her father (stepfather?) is so depressed he barely gets up to eat let alone run the family business, so she's going to high school and somehow also operating a launderette. Oh and looking after her brat baby brother. So all this is going on and you're telling me these adults customers are bearing down on her for being late to open shop or not having something pressed in time?
That knowing her mother just drowned in a lake her gym teacher is nagging at her for not swimming??
That, despite everyone knowing it, no one tells off the man trying to manipulate the family into losing their home and business???
What kind of town and place is this??
I really liked the sheet-ghosts and I thought that the little ghost Wendell's arc was really touching and cute.
The illustrations were generally fine but I'm not entirely sure I understood Marj's character design: she looks old and perpetually wet. Maybe a style choice given the character?
This is a nice little story and good for middle-grade readers but wasn't quite my cup of tea.
