Atmospheric and heartfelt
I picked up this book because it was on a list of horror novels based in the state I grew up in, Iowa. It was really fun picking up all the little bits that reminded me of home, like Casey's pizza, and the feel of driving past endless fields of corn.
This book is beautifully written with a very toned down mood. Everything feels almost dreamlike. Everything moves slowly and it seems no one is in a hurry. I admit, this book didn't give me enough horror elements for my taste, but I'm giving it 5 stars for the gorgeous prose.
All of that said, I would love to see a book or story focused on the cult that appears in this novel. Overall, I think this book will appeal to people who enjoy a slow burn with a creeping feeling of uneasiness carrying you through.
