Hope In The Dark by Rebecca Solnit

4.0

This is a great tonic for when you find yourself slipping into complete despair, cynicism and grief about the state of the world. It’s a good reminder about how much comfort we seek in certainty and how doomsdaying and hopelessness achieves just that, while aspiring for change and meaning actually takes more courage. Also a great reminder of the non-linear nature of social progress and the ways in which success is often invisible while failure or shortcoming is illuminated in efforts to drive change. It’s hard to find good-faith critiques of the left and this is a very gentle and well-intentioned one. Good to read when everything in the world feels sad and hard.
