Interesting psychological study of a marriage and the effect of the other-who-I-could-be on the self.

Irene, a light-skinned Black woman who chooses not to "pass" as white (most of the time) develops an obsession with Clare, a childhood friend who lives her life as a white woman. Irene's feelings towards Clare vascillate: in turns she feels protective, annoyed, disgusted, superior, jealous.
