The idea that an individual can use a program or a mechanism to temporarily turn down the intensity of unwanted emotions was novel to me. There is a cost to pay eventually, when the load of repressed emotions must be released in an intense storm. Other interesting elements were the perceptual difference between magic and understanding the design of structures, and the role of anthropologists to either observe or intervene in social conflicts.
