A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

4.0

It's giving twilight and vampire diaries vibes - which makes sense for when this was written. Either way, I still enjoyed the writing and story. My only qualms is that Diana started off being so smart and scholarly and then gave it all up when she met Matthew. He became her sole personality trait. That and "I am the strongest witch to ever exist ever and I don't want to be a witch at all, oh and I can't control my magic", which is pretty cliché. It also felt a little lazy in the naming conventions. Her powers were called "witch water", "witch fire", and "witch air". Like...come on. It would have been much better if it was just called water, fire, and air rather than making it sound silly by adding "witch" right in front of it, as to make it sound bigger when it really just made it sound silly. If you take it for what it is and for when it was written, it tracks. Still a decent read either way.
