Batman: Last Knight on Earth (2019) #1 by Scott Snyder

5.0

Alright so I’ve been looking forward to this since I heard the basic longline that Batman carries Jokers head in a jar through the desert.

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman was one of the first things I pulled in my monthlies when I first started with single issues. And this is being toted as the end and last story of those two doing Batman. And he’ll have they done Batman. Iconic stories, visceral images, quirky, weird, fun, they’re run on Batman is so good and sits proudly among my favorites on my Bat shelf. When they get together and when apart fine work is produced.

If you were to ask me my favorite artist working in comics it’d be Greg Capullo. If you were to ask me of the writers that have an instant read from me it’d be a list but on that list would be Scott Snyder because I can feel his love for comics, for storytelling in general. And in raw emotional impact this oversized DC Black Label edition has five stars because I loved every page of it. I smiled, I became sad, I laughed. It had me bouncing from one end to the other. It’s got payoff from their run and chops for itself because it’s a monster of plot, characterization, payoffs, and really it feels like the end to something. Part of that comes from the feeling of stakes. Batman feels alone here, like it’s him and this head in a jar out to save the world from something he may have helped to create.

I won’t dive into the plot because you should experience this as it comes if my two cents if worth anything at all. What I will tell you though is that this feels in continuity with the rest of the Snyder and Capullo run from court of Owls to a super heavy at least. Familiar images and ideas played off of. Though you should read Metal because it’s a blast of an event and All Star Batman because did nothing else it was interesting to read issue to issue. Basically I’m saying to get everything out of this I think you should read the work they’ve done on Batman before. Because it feels like a continuation and an end because it’s a nightmare Batman never dreamed of.

Lastly know that everyone working on this book is firing on all cylinders. Snyder is have a super plot heavy wacky narrative acid trip day at the office and I love it. Capullo is crafting images that tell the story themselves, all while being some of loveliest stuff you ever seen. Johnathan Glapion is inking it so well you hardly think of it as a comic isn’t flows so damn well. And FCO Plascenia uses the color at every opportunity. The colors covey the emotion the desert is orange and yellow, underground is purple. Oh god I love this, it’s one of the best things I’ve picked up off the rack for a long while.

5 stars. Fucking love it. I’m here for the whole ride.
