*2016 Update*
Almost as good as the first read. Of course, that may because I forgot so much of what happened. I think the first time I read it I just wanted to find out what happened and I read it too fast to fully grasp anything. It's always nice to read these kinds of a books a second time with hindsight. I was able to pick up some of the clues I know I missed the first time through.

*****Summary (may contain spoilers)*****
Blomkvist's journalism career is in trouble so when Henrik Vanger (the former CEO of a prominent Swedish family) comes forward asking for his help solving a 40 year old case dealing with the case of his missing niece, Harriet. No one really thinks that much will come of the whole process, but with the help of Salander Blomkvist ends up unearthing serial killers across two generations and solving the mystery. Then with Salander's help he gets revenge on Wennerstrom (the cause of his work-related problems).

Although this book is called "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", Salander (the girl in question) plays a main, but supporting role. I think the original Swedish title (which translates to "Men who Hate Women" I think) is more fitting. Salander's limited storyline in this one sets up the following two books (not sure about the fourth since I haven't read that one). The violence towards women throughout this book is, at times, difficult to read. From the Vangers to Lisbeth's guardian every man half the men are pure evil. It's disgusting.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the fact that they didn't report Martin to the police. Even for those girls who are long dead, wouldn't it be comforting to their families to know what happened? Although, maybe for something that horrible it is better not to know? The whole thing is so sad. However, Larsson writes strong female characters (Salander and Berger...even Cecilia Vanger to a point). Women have multiple partners and no one bats an eye. Women fight back. These women are strong. And yet, even they can become victims. Just shows how messed up everything is.
