abbyro95 's review for:
Crazy Rich Asians
by Kevin Kwan
I watched the movie first, so my review is biased from that. I liked the book and all of the notes explaining Chinese and Singapore culture. It was similar to the move but way more detailed and expanded on other characters. But that we’re one thing I didn’t like.
The main story and characters are Nick and Rachel, but from the start at least every other chapter was about another family, the mother, or the cousin. It was interesting to get a deeper dive than the movie, but until later in the book I felt like I never got much story just with Nick and Rachel. Even when it was a chapter on them, when it got to a good scene it would just stop midway through the evening or wherever they were and you’d have to wait a few more chapters to continue with their story.
The book focused a lot more on Astrid than I expected. I kind of got tired reading her story because I just wanted it to get back to Nick and Rachel. I get how it related to the overall theme, but it just seemed like too much on her, she became a full side story. Again, biased from the movie.
Overall good. Probably would have liked it better if I hadn’t seen the movie first. But I liked having the movie characters in my head during the book, great casting. Probably won’t read the sequels though.
