The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud
4.0

I liked this book. It took me a while to get into it, (fantasy is not my favorite genre) but after I did, I was hooked. I loved Bartimaeus, the sarcastic, world weary djinni summoned by the precocious magician in training, Nathanial. At age 6, Nathanial is abandoned by his parents and apprenticed to a stodgy, second rate magician, Arthur Underwood. While his master may be a cold fish, his wife is warm and welcoming. In the midst of using Bartimaeus to get even with another powerful magician, Simon Lovelace, Nathanial and Bartimaeus end up having to work together to avert disaster.
This series was written around the same time as the Harry Potter books. (I could barely make my way through the first one of those) I found Philip Pullman's Dark Matters Trilogy and devoured it instead. I wish I had found these also.
