The Beauty and the Beast
by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve
Four stars here mostly for the pretty illustrated edition of this book. The story was...interesting to read the original, but ultimately not that great. My only complaint for the illustrations is that would have been cool to see a reimagining of the beast based on the text from this book. We don’t get a lot of description, but we at least know it’s supposed to be a stocky, scaled creature. Instead the illustrations are pretty Disney-esque.
For the story portion...the whole story between beauty and the beast actually takes place in the first half of the book and then we get to spend the next hundred pages going through it again from the beasts point of view, followed by a few more chapters of faerie backstory.
