Fortune Favors the Cruel by Kel Carpenter, Lucinda Dark

3.0

This was not bad. It was fast-paced in that I didn't realize I was at the end of the book until I got there. And the characters, they're unique and I want to know them. I am going to read the next book, I do see a lot of potential. It's just that I feel like this could have been a stronger book in terms of relationship-building and even plot.

The characters are so dark. They have really interesting back stories that I just know will be awesome, but they're all so cagey about answering questions that we don't really get to learn much about them or dwell on the traits or qualities they cultivated through their experiences. Because there wasn't a lot of personality given to them, it's hard to find redeeming qualities so the darkness of their characters is really strong. I don't dislike them, I just hope the next book focuses more on them as people and they open up more so we get to see more than just one side of them.

There is definitely that enemies-to-lovers tension, but surprisingly, it is pretty slow burn. I was expecting more, but I'm not complaining. I think it will be good in the upcoming books since there's 5 in the series, it'll be good to foster it slowly.

The plot is a bit obscure because, again, the characters are very tight-lipped. Even the revelation of certain goals and characters, in other books, they would be a big moments, but because everyone is so tightly wound, I feel like it wasn't as hyped as it should have been. That's where we also miss the characters' personalities since they don't really emote. There were a few scenes that were a little soft, but not enough for me to feel like I understand the characters.

I do have a feeling the next books will be better so we shall see!
