The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
5.0

Good job killing the Dark Lord, kid. Hey, young idealistic boy, do you want to rule the country? Of course! How hard can it be?

The Well of Ascension picks up after the events of the Final Empire and continues the savory dark goodness. The heroes have won and learn ruling and reforming an empire used to evil isn't an easy task. Meanwhile those they have lost quickly have a cult dedicated to their worship, leaving them to question; does this honor or insult their friend's legacy?

The characters remain strong, especially Vin and Elend. Vin continues to be the awesome character that she is, growing in power and her own femininity. She also adopts a giant wolfhound as an animal sidekick, which was great. Tiny girl with giant beast that she can sick on her enemies? Love it. Elend and Sazed also goes through surprising amount of development. Elend learns what it means to lead, while Sazed actually explores some pretty significant religious questions of belief that only get harder.

This is perhaps the most 'normal' of the Mistborn books, being a simple political drama with the characters navigating the cost of victory. Still, the questions explored and the characters doing it are phenomenal. I always love when a sequel asks realistic questions about post-victory. Sometimes winning the day isn't enough and sometimes happily ever after isn't so simple or obtainable.

In short, this was another great story, continuing the story of Vin after the day has been won. And y'all the ending gets me hyped for the next one that will also be completely different!
