The plot of this book is good, though nothing crazy, while the descriptions transport you right to 15th century China and are what makes it stand out. I felt so immersed in the setting, and the story was so timeless, that I sometimes forgot it took place thousands of years ago.
I loved how the author explored the realities of Yunxian being both privileged and oppressed, progressive and traditional. While she did push boundaries, she also rarely recognized her privilege. Meiling is everything Yunxian is not (beautiful but common, “dirty” in the eyes of men but allowed to freely pursue her career) and is a great reminder to Yunxian of the good she has while inspiring her to spread the wealth.
Of course I loved the focus on female friendships and the idea of found family within them. I especially love Miss Zhao’s redemption arc. Overall, the book was a sweet read and I enjoyed it top to bottom.
