Against Nature
by Joris-Karl Huysmans
Guy ruins his mind by being profligate, then ruins his body by being a hermit. Fortunately, beef tea cures all.
This is just the weirdest book. It's not really even fiction, just a guy going "blah blah here's what I think about books, religion, perfume, England, tortoises, and eating like a peasant." It's both skimworthy and stangely engrossing ans/or horrifying--I can see where a lot of authors have drawn on this.
I can't recommend it, and yet...I guess I do.
