I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston

5.0

5/5 stars. this was fucking amazing. review to come.

I wasn’t sure about this book since YA hasn’t been much of a hot for me lately, but Casey has done it again. I will officially read anything that Casey writes.

Chloe & Shara and Smith & Rory were fucking amazing characters and their development was the best I think I’ve ever seen in a YA book. I loved how Shara was this “perfect” christian girl that was secretly sapphic (unspecified on wether she is a lesbian) and has a badass personality, while Chloe is truly who she shows people, even if they don’t see her, like Shara did.

Rory was the “bad boy” next door who was characterized as not giving a shit and acting all cool (he really is), and also portrayed as being in love with Shara, but was later revealed to have ACTUALLY been in love with Smith, Sharas boyfriend and ohhhh man I was rooting for them the entire time. Smith is your “typical” job who of which is figuring out his sexuality as well as his identity, and I love it so much since it’s not something that is explored in YA all that often. I loved how he was gender-questioning and was able to have so much support from Chloe, Shara, Rory, and a few other friends

The representation in this consisted of a bisexual MC, Sapphic love interest (unspecified, maybe lesbian), achillean SC (probably gay), gay SC, non-binary SC, lesbian SC, a bisexual SC, and possibly some other representation (I currently can’t remember) that was phenomenal.

This book also had some very important conversations that I really appreciated and would have loved to have had when I was younger.

Overall I love this book and can’t wait for Casey’s next release.
