I loved stepping back into the dark, magical world of Yale's secret societies again. Magic in this world is so great, bloody and messy and ugly. Alex is a self-described "cannonball" of a protagonist and it's easy to follow her from her dorm to eerie Black Elm and down to the gates of hell. And I feel so much closer to the supporting characters—Dawes, Turner, Tripp, Mercy—but Darlington is even more of a mystery to me (for obvious reasons). The build up in part one was slow, while part two felt too fast paced, with not much time spent in moments where I wanted to linger. But I'm really looking forward to book three!
Graphic: Animal death, Murder, Violence, and Death
Minor: Drug abuse, Sexual violence, and Sexual assault
