Luck on the Line by Zoraida Córdova

I really enjoyed the beginning of this story, but as I read on, everything just went downhill for me. There were tiny parts that made me really confused, Lucky would be drinking and seem completely fine until the author says she slurring. I'm kind of like 'what?' I mean I don't understand how she could go from talking normally, to all of a sudden slurring. Or as a reader, am I suppose to assume that she's drunk based on the fact that she's drinking? I did somewhat enjoy the development between Lucky and James. I just didn't really feel anything towards their relationship. It was just kind of there. The characters weren't necessarily terrible, they just weren't memorable for me. Although, I honestly could not tolerate Lucky's mother. I mean I understand where she was coming from, but I don't think her behavior could be justified. It was just completely unnecessary and in my opinion, unforgivable for the way she acts. The only reason why I gave this story a two stars was because I enjoyed the author's writing.
