The Crown by Kiera Cass

4.0

I'll be honest, I kind of felt obligated to give this book five stars for the LGBT representation, but in the end of the day I don't feel like it totally deserved it.

Yes, I love this series and how Cass's writing is so entrancing, where I can loose myself in this world and not realize how late it is until I'm finished. I love how she gives characters depth and can write a plot that will leave you hanging on until the end.

However, I do feel as though the romance in this novel was very forced. Yes, I could kind of see the end coming, but unlike America and Maxon, Eadlyn didn't have much time and romantic experiences with who she eventually ended up choosing. That made the whole romance feel more false to me.

Remember that snotty brat that was introduced to us at the beginning of The Heir? Well, in this book Eadlyn becomes such a powerful, wise leader that I really don't have anything but respect for her. She's brave and listens to her people and in this novel she makes choices that no other leader dreamed of making.

The point in this book that I absolutely loved was what made this book 4 stars for me. I will avoid naming names to help prevent spoilers, but be warned. So the guy that I really wanted to end up with Eadlyn was starting to become very nervous about the prospect of marrying her. Which makes sense, I mean being king is a lot of responsibility. But in the twist of the year, Cass reveals that the reason he was getting cold feet was BECAUSE HE AND ANOTHER SUITOR WERE DATING AND WANTED TO BE TOGETHER! So my gay little heart was exploding with feels and was happy with the way that Cass gave us representation and also gave me zero reason to be disappointed with Eadlyn not choosing him. I'll be honest, my gaydar was questioning him a little throughout this book before that was revealed, and I am so happy it was right.

If Cass ever decides to write another book in this series, write it about those two guys. I'd read it any day, but for now I'll just stick to the fanfics.

So while this book does pale in comparison to the original trilogy, I definitely think it is worth a read, even if you didn't like The Heir.
