Stone Butch Blues
by Leslie Feinberg
This has been one of the most visceral reads I have ever encounter. The first third of the book was emotionally jarring and physically draining as I encountered the protagonist Jess in the midst of horrific situations and experiences. As hard as it was getting through those chapters and the ensuing struggle that you accompany Jess...it is also a book that I would highly recommend. This book grabs you by your heart and never allows you to forget the humanity of the characters. In a society that attempts to do just that, to those who do not conform to the ingrained gender binary, this book places the reader in the utter humanity of others. The joy and depression, the hope and despair, the love and fear...all of it, the entire human spectrum of emotion is encountered through these characters and I see the LGBTQ community's, along side all other marginalized groups, fight for space in this society in a brighter and more illuminating light.
