The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

5.0

I've been CRAVING with all my soul a superb fantasy novel and I just wanted to consume this one! I got this book as a birthday present from Molly and being perfectly honest the premise wasn't one that intrigued me. Urban fantasy is a genre which I find hard to vibe with but this book gelled with its grittiness and its subversion of fairy tales. It took me around 50 pages to get used to the concept but after that I was utterly hooked. First and foremost I adored the characters, I grew so attached to Hester, Cai and Devon in particular, a heroine full of surprises. The writing is beautiful, it reads with a storybook-like narration and the dialogue is brimming with humour, an absolute delight to read.

One thing that I did not expect to connect with as much is Devon's experience of motherhood, Sunyi Dean writes this viscerally and vividly, the emotions Devon is confronting so palpable and raw that even though I'm not a mother I felt like I was experiencing it with her. Devon as a character in general is multi-faceted, she is a character you grow to know as the narrative progresses. She continuously surprised me, a character who does not necessarily fall into good or evil but amongst shades of grey.
