Born in Fire
by K.F. Breene
This review is specifically for the GraphicAudio production of Born in Fire. The DDVN series is one of my comfort reads, and this book in particular is a go-to for getting out of a reading slump, so listening to it as a full cast performance sounded amazing. But while this series is a 5 stars all around for me, there were things about the GraphicAudio that just didn't work well for me as a listener.
To be clear, the casting and performances of each and every voice actor was amazing! Reagan was just as I imagined her! I loved listening to a full cast performance of this book and the adaptation of the book into a script was so well done, I didn't even notice and difference from reading.
For me, the issues comes with the background sounds added to the performance: footsteps while characters are walking and music in the background of the bar or for setting the scene. Those sounds were too loud in comparison to the voices that I found it distracting, particularly the footsteps. I will listen to another GraphicAudio production from a different series to see if it was just this single book or if as a neurodiverse listener, the format just doesn't work well for me.
This all being said, it was incredibly difficult to rate this audiobook. The story and performance by the narrators were easily 5 stars, it's only the postproduction editing with sound effects that I had trouble with. I'm keeping my book rating of 5 stars for Goodreads because of the amazing story, but give the GraphicAudio on Audible 4 stars.
