Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

5.0

There is beautiful language, very sensual imagery and alluring characters. I felt enraged and genuinely terrified at moments albeit I am not a true crime or horror book reader and probably have quite a low tolerance. This book follows a young socialite from Mexico City on a journey to check in on her cousin, a journey that very quickly ascended from strange to horrifying and becomes a rescue mission. There is a romance element as well and the horror feels rooted in the real horror of patriarchy, colonialism and white supremacy. The sentient mushrooms and extension of life along with cannibalism and mind control is very well done. I especially loved and hated realizing Noemis nightmares were actually memories.
