Mary: or, The Birth of Frankenstein
by Anne Eekhout
“although she cannot explain how—is her own. It is her monster, this monster. She has always carried it with her. She carries it under her bosom, keeping it warm, keeping it wild. But now the time has come to set it free.”
A gothic historical novel about Mary Shelley and the imagined beginnings of the novel Frankenstein from within her.
It was as others claim, a spooky Sapphic romance but felt more YA at points.
Not my favourite novel of the year, was glad to finish it and be able to move on as there was no denouement to the ending as such.
