My Mum Tracy Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson

2.0

so in anticipation of the new tv show i decided to buy the book and read it beforehand, naturally it is a kids book so it was easy reading and i got through it very quickly.

tracy is tracy, not much has changed personality wise but things have changed in her life, she now has a daughter and lives in a council flat in between jobs.

she meets sean goodfrey who was a childhood friend (football if you ever read the story of tracy beaker books) they get to know each other and get together. sean is now a famous footballer and very quickly he and tracy get engaged and move in together (along with jess and their new dog alfie).

jess, tracy's daughter, is very much what people would say 'mature for her age' she basically looks after tracy as much as tracy looks after her. jess uplifts and encourages tracy whenever she is down, emphasising that tracy is a good mum and is the best mum, something i can see will take a toll on jess later in life.

tracy is in love with sean, possibly more the idea of sean as he is egoisitc and borderline manipulative and controlling. yes he also had a bad childhood which tracy mentions multiple times in the book as a way to excuse his behaviour however there are a lot of things which happened which are just unnecessary and controlling.

when jess and tracy first moved in with sean he wouldnt let them take things from their flat, ornaments etc because it's "junk and will clutter his house". there are a lot of red flags there and overall i didn't like him at all.

justine makes a return is of course is always something entertaining to read, she hasnt changed much either apart from the fact she is divorced and ran a business before she went bust.

it is later revealed that sean has had a secret phone and has been cheating on tracy with justine, he then turns it around onto tracy saying that it is her fault she snooped around (jess found the phone and messages).

sometimes the book was a bit painful to read, maybe it is because i am an adult now therefore can see all the wrong things tracy does with jess or what sean does, at times it frustrated me because i had always imagined tracy as a wonderful mother, which she still is, but at times some of the things she does isnt healthy for jess. i can only assume it's simply due to the fact she is still struggling with her childhood traumas and it also doesnt help that book tracy is a lot different to tv tracy.

i am excited to see the show and im sure it'll be great!!
