The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman

5.0

A delightful read - 5*

I first read this book in 2009 - was it really six years ago? This book was part of the topic we had to study in English and I thoroughly enjoyed it then. However, a lot of the class didn't understand the language and this confused me deeply. Perhaps, it was because a majority of the students in the class were 'readers' like myself and so found it difficult. I was used to reading books from the 19th century and so the fact that this was set in the 18th century didn't affect me. (It was written in 1988 - what was so difficult?)

I really did enjoy this book and enjoyed the BBC adaptation in 2009.
Fast-forward to 2015 where I decided to read this book again. It is such a short story and allows me to escape from the pressures of assignments and university. I decided to read this book again so that I could continue to the rest of the series.

I really look forward to reading The Shadow in the North.
