Abeni's Song by P. Djèlí Clark

4.0

4* for the story, 2* for the audio narration, which is sad. I really enjoyed the narrators original voice and also her adult voices, but the way she did the kids voices (and for some strange reasons some few adults also sound like 4 year olds after a helium balloon), and some of the spirit voices really, really grated on me. I almost DNFed the book due to that, which is a shame as her normale voice is amazing to listen to, just the dialogue parts in that super high voice almost hurt.

Now to the story, which was somewhere between middle grade and YA. It's quite dark and epic for most middle grade readers, however the kids were actual kids, so might be too young for some teen readers who do feel very "grown up' already.

I loved the ideas, the magic, the spirits and the world, which felt fresh and intriguing.

The plot also managed a good balance, being easy enough to follow for you get readers, without being to predictable.

Abeni and her crew of friends she assembles along the way were a joy to spend time with, and I especially liked their different personalities.
