The Brothers Karamazov
by Fyodor Dostoevsky
This book has a great plot, interesting characters, lots of drama and mystery and conflict, and even a courtroom nail biter worthy of Law And Order. The only problem is, it is about 400 pages too long, and all of the extra words contained in those pages just confuse me. Having read other Russian novels by other writers, I can't decide if this is a translation issue or a style of the culture that I just don't get, as a modern American who appreciates getting right to the point. The philosophical issues, the conflict between faith and doubt, are so great and are worthy of reading. But I will totally understand if you decide not to read this daunting book. It's like having to open a giant oyster with your bare hands to dig out that one tiny pearl....is it worth it? Maybe.
