The Emperor's Soul
by Brandon Sanderson
A forger is found guilty and faces death but her help is needed in a very delicate matter...
This is an ordinary fantasy story with no surprises. I liked the magical system that the author built around "forgery", a pretty unique idea and it was unfortunate that the life-or-death race didn't allow more exploration. Only later I learnt that this is one of the author's trademarks, and rightly so. The story itself was well written with good pacing but I would have loved to see better characters, they never left their self imposed limits and felt flat. Stories like that are the reason why I am careful with mainstream fantasy. While there is no doubt that they are entertaining, they don't challenge the reader and leave no mark.
