Another Chloe Gong review—who’s surprised? Last Violent Call is divided into two novellas: A Foul Thing and This Foul Murder. Together, the stories had their purpose and executed them in that quintessential Gong way. Only this time, readers are able to peer into the domestic livelihoods of Juliette and Roma, and Benedikt and Marshall. It’s been awhile since I read Our Violent Ends, and as a result, I felt a little removed from the characters. Still, I feel I was able to be thrown back into the knife-wielding, gun-toting hearts of these former Shanghai gangsters. The murder-mystery element of TFM was especially fun for my reading slump brain. All in all, I’m more than ready to pick up Foul Heart Huntsman and finish this captivating journey that has spanned years for me through Secret Shanghai.
