The Patrick Melrose Novels by Edward St. Aubyn
4.0
Never mind the misleading cover. There is no glamour, or laughter, or romance. This is a novel (well, four novels) filled with vile, privileged people viciously abusing each other. If you need your fictional characters to be likeable, don't bother. If you appreciate brilliant writing and don't mind a bit of depravity, go ahead. The story of Patrick Melrose is captivating, told in sharp, polished prose, with wonderfully wry dialogue. The only thing keeping me from a five star rating is the second book, Bad News, detailing a few days of Patrick's drug-addled stay in NYC. Reading about self-obsessed junkies is always tiresome, even when the writer is as talented as St. Aubyn.
