Isdraken
by George R.R. Martin
I picked this book up for my niece, for her 11th birthday. Although I am not quite sure, it will probably suit my 7-year old nephew better, with his penchant for dragons. The story is short and easy, beautifully illustrated. It's quite beautifully written, but it is very much aimed at a young audience. It's about a fifteen minute read for an adult.
The story is that of Adara, a winter's child, with a cold touch. Her mother died during labor. She befriends an ice dragon that comes to visit her every winter. There is a war going on, and going badly. The ice dragon is finally enlisted to save Adara's family. The ending is a bit of a shock, and quite unexpected. This is of course George R. R. Martin, and he keeps killing characters even in books written for children. What else can we expect?!
