I expected to hate it, the characters actions were egotistical, their personalities unlikeable, their philosophy unsuited to the real world. It's only towards the end when they take pains to explain the motivation behind all their actions does it all make sense. Whilst there's no chance I'll be signing up to their republican ultra-individualism any time soon, it's not hard to see the appeal and desire for a strong sense of self
