The lost village was really slow moving at first. It took about a third of the book for me to get into it.  Then the end seemed a bit anticlimactic. As the story unfolds you learn more about what happened in the village leading up to the disappearance of the entire town. You get more background about the past of the characters in present day. I know many have talked about the abelism, but based off of the time frame it makes sense. Autistic people or any body who was different than the "normal" majority was deemed a witch or other things. I hated the story of the past for the exact reason why it was good. It was so religiously culty it was disgusting. The manipulation of the pastor was laid out well.
