Our Hideous Progeny
by C.E. McGill
I really liked Maisie and the depiction of chronic illness, how it’s a sometimes thing that many people don’t understand. And her slow-going friendship turned romance with Mary, although I wish there had been so much more of the romance aspect.
The pacing gets sooo slow in the middle of the book. It’s all science experiments (recounted instead of told in a fun way) and conference discussions and misogyny. And for being a Frankenstein story, the creature itself hardly gets the focus it should! Enjoyed Mary bonding with it but I wanted more: what is its danger, Mary’s responsibility to it, etc.
The confrontation at the end is murderous and fun (finally some good action) and love the happy ending for Mary & Maisie. Overall a good book, but I just feel that it could’ve gone so much deeper.
