The Matchbox Diary by Bagram Ibatoulline, Paul Fleischman

emotional hopeful inspiring lighthearted reflective medium-paced

4.0

I love the stance of this book - that we humans all have stories to tell, stories we want to tell, memories we want to keep, no matter who we are.  When the grandfather in the book was young, he did not know how to read or write, but he kept souvenirs in individual matchboxes, like a diary, to help him remember his stories.  He retells these stories to his great-granddaughter, orally and visually, even though he can now read and write.
