Frustratingly, the two main characters who want to have sex, do not have sex when they both desperately need it!

I didn’t really know what to expect from this book, having read Rivers of London and the Shadow Police series (and loving them) I picked this up as potentially similar, but it is vastly more in the realms of fantasy - no bad thing! I really enjoyed the characters, and their development, despite the fantasy of what was happening to them they seemed very real, and very believable. The pace of events is quite brisk, and I wasn’t sure why things were happening but I never felt like I was slogging it to find out the twist. I did guess how the villain would be overcome, but enjoyed it anyway, and love how the story has been left for the next book. The plot is interesting, and comes together well.

I’m also used to reading epic sagas, and I really love that this book is relatively short, certainly packs a lot into those pages. I really enjoyed the humour and quips throughout the book, it is dry, lurid and dirty, it really matches what I was imagining of the era and ambience of when the book is set. There was just enough world building for my imagination to run with it, without hogging pages of book.
