The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James
4.0

I’ve read/listened to enough Simone St. James books to know I really love her style, characters, and stories. I figured it was time to check out her first one and it did not disappoint. It’s a really great, creepy ghost story and I’m always a fan of post-war settings. The love story in this could have been left out and the sex scenes were, frankly, not well done and problematic (as other reviewers have noted). As this was her first book, it’s not surprising that she does a better job with this in later books like An Inquiry Into Love and Death. Sadly, the narrator for Maddy Clare is not that great, but I was too invested in the story to care for once. Her voice didn’t suit Sarah Piper and her male voices are meh. If you’re looking for an eerie, post-war ghost story, definitely give this a read!
