Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler

This is one of those books that based on Goodreads reviews, you either love it or hate it. I definitely fall closer to the love it camp. This book has been in my stack of to read books forever so I had forgotten why I had originally picked it up. I thought it was a memoir and half way through (when I decided to google what NYC restaurant it was set in) realized it wasn't! But it really reads like a coming of age, young girl in the city memoir which is a personal favorite genre of mine! Which might be why I liked it so much. Author Stephanie Danler said that this is a love story to the restaurant industry and I agree. The story follows Tess, who is called New Girl throughout the book, for a year as she works as a back waiter at a popular NYC restaurant. The restaurant is compared to the trendy Union Square Cafe. I loved all of the food and wine talk, the complicated relationships, the half heard conversations...There is some criticism that there is not much plot and that is true.

For highly sensitive readers, there is a lot of alcohol and drug use and also a couple of "open door" sex scenes(not a lot) but just FYI.
