City in Embers
by Stacey Marie Brown
This book is the first book in the Collector series and starts at the end of the Darkness series.
I absolutely loved Savage Lands (still need to finish the series). I also enjoyed Darkness of Light (the first book in the Darkness series), so I was really excited to receive a #gifted copy of City in Embers from @hambright_pr. Unfortunately, this book did not hook me like the other books I have read by SMB. I don't know if it was the mood I was in or the timing of the book, but it just wasn't gripping me as much. I did feel that the last quarter of the book picked up and makes me want to read the next book to see what happens, but it was definitely a very slow start for me.
I did love Sprig, the monkey-sprite and I found him pretty funny! I am hoping the next book in the series will pick up and hook me better than this book did.
I will say SMB's writing is always impeccable and she does a great job of writing her characters and the relationships between them. That is why I think it was more of a me problem then a SMB/book problem. I feel a reading slump coming on and that may be why this book did not hook me like SMB books normally do.
Read if you like:
-Badass heroines
-Funny monkey side characters
-Apocalyptic setting
-Fae warriors
-Urban fantasy
Thank you @hambright_pr for the #gifted copy.
