The Bees by Laline Paull

4.0

4 stars.

'The Bees' was as ground-breaking and thrilling for me as 'The Handmaid's Tale' was for others. It was unique, unflinching and unapologetic in its portrayal of a hive mind and its plot was rich, sticky and thick, like honey. The narrative style was reminiscent of that used in 'The Walking Dead' and 'Game of Thrones' - spontaneous, unpredictable and jaw-dropping during climactic moments. This clashed occasionally with the novel's pace, as Paull took the time to world-build intricately and the slip from active prose to descriptive language made it difficult to maintain tension.
