A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout
2.0
Oddly enough, this book reminded me of a second season of a 24-episode season of network television--both for good and for bad.
The good:
* moments that catch you off guard
* characters you're invested in
* easy to consume/follow
* a season finale cliffhanger that baits you into the next installment.
The bad:
* repetitive dialogue and scenes that go in circles, wherein characters appear to learn the same lessons but don't show growth
* sporadic action or plot that has slowed down significantly from the previous season because the budget halved
* dialogue scenes with barely any subtext
* everything could have been condensed to fewer episodes to the story's benefit
