The Davenports by Krystal Marquis

3.0

Set in Chicago in 1910, this historical fiction book explores the Davenport family. As one of the cities most respected families and one of the few Black families to achieve wealth, the Davenport daughters are expected to behave a certain way. The book also explores the story of Amy-Rose, the mixed-race maid hoping to open her own salon to serve Black women in the community. I enjoyed the historical aspects of this novel, especially the characters who were based on lesser-known real life people. It felt a little long to me but I think it will be interesting to follow this family through the years as the series progresses.
