A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

5.0

I debated on whether to rate this five stars. The reason I'm giving it the five stars is because I believe this story successfully does what it sets out to do and manages to do it in a skillful, well-constructed manner.

The story seems to mostly be about Dex finding meaning in their life, which pairs well with Mosscap's journey back to the world of humans to learn what it now means to be human.

If you aren't someone who finds value in therapy, I can see where this story could become tedious. Dex is asking "What's wrong with me?" because they feel like something is missing and wrong. Dex reads as though they are struggling with depression, and it feels so on the mark that I got frustrated sharing in Dex's struggle.

I think my only issue with the story is that I found some of Mosscap's insights during its conversations with Dex a little too insightful since it's never had any interaction with humanity.

Overall, Becky Chambers impressed me, and I want to read more of her work.
