I adored this book! To me, it read like a more mature YA fantasy-dystopian novel from my high school years. And I am here for it! It was an easy read with some darker and more adult themes. I loved learning about this world and would read anything set in this universe because it is so intriguing to me. I couldn’t put this book down. Some parts of the plot are very predictable, and the book felt mostly character driven as we watch Violet survive her first year at Basgiath. There is some depth to the characters, but not a ton, so I’m hoping to see more throughout the series. I enjoyed the diversity of the cast and appreciated Yarros’ content warnings at the beginning of the book. My biggest issues: tons of f-bombs that felt like they were added to prove the book was adult fantasy and not YA, and the two spicy scenes felt a little bit the same way. Overall, this is an easy and enjoyable adult fantasy that kept me up late to read or kept me from doing adult responsibilities because I couldn’t put it down. I am so excited for the next book!
